The Manhattan Community Health Foundation provided Jana Rosich with one of six Ascension Via Christi Hospital Manhattan Education Scholarships for the 2023 and 2024 academic year. Jana will graduate from Wichita State University’s nursing program in May 2023 and begin her healthcare career. We had a chance to learn a bit more about her.

Jana caught the eye of the hospital nursing staff when she accompanied a patient at the hospital who needed care but was very anxious about her situation.

Could you tell us about a memorable moment that confirmed your decision to be a nurse? She did not have her glasses, and she could not hear. Hearing aids don’t help her; she does not tolerate them. I found a way to calm her down. I know she enjoys animals, so I showed her pictures of dogs, cats, and animals on my phone. I enlarged the image so she could see it and moved it around so she could see the details. That helped calm her down. I asked the nurses, who were trying to get an IV into her if I could get paper, a pen, and a clipboard to write down what they wanted to do to her. I started writing what they wanted to do in big, bold letters where she could see it. I wrote, “We need an IV.” She said, “Oh, okay.”

What do you tell people you want to do? I enjoy talking to people and hearing their stories. Nursing, in general, is learning about the patient and what they have gone through in the past that has led to the condition they are going through now. Combining my love for helping people and the study of medicine, these things are definitely why I want to be a nurse, and my choice has strengthened with nursing school.

What would you like to become? I have got big hopes and big dreams. I know that I will achieve them because it is something I cannot ever stop thinking about. I want to be a CRNA ultimately. I like that high acuity care setting like the ICU. I love that intensive stuff because I'm like a go-getter. It's hard to describe it, but I like the idea of life-saving measures. It gets me excited and keeps me on my toes and learning more. I am a continuous learner. It keeps me going.

What has been the most challenging and who has helped you? Aside from the content, learning how to manage and organize my time has been the most challenging thing. My mom and dad have supported me and everything I needed, whether helping me with money or emotional support. They were always there if I needed someone to talk to or to be home. They moved here in June.

What is your favorite place in Manhattan? My boyfriend is the current assistant golf coach at Colbert Hills, so I can play there for free. Colbert Hills is a place where I can go if I need to get away. It's beautiful out there. As much as I love being with people, sometimes you need that quiet time. When playing golf, I am very competitive against myself, which is another thing that is also good with nursing. Because you're working as a team, it's not like I'm trying to compete against another nurse to be better than them. You're trying to get better for yourself and your patients.
